Certifications through Chadwell University
Certified Pool Operator
Operator training is required in 24 states. The PHTA* Pool/Spa Operator Certification is the world’s leading verifiable credential. Chadwell University’s two-day course, taught by PHTA* certified instructor, Vann Flippen, includes 14 hours of instruction, the PHTA* Pool & Spa Operator Handbook, and an open book written examination. (*NSPF, the National Swimming Pool Foundation, is now PHTA, the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance.)
Do I need to study before the class?
No, the two-day class will walk you through the PHTA Handbook and all you need to know for the exam.
What is needed for the class?
Please bring a photo ID, calculator, pencil and highlighter to the class.
If you have a current license that will soon expire, please bring your current license to class with you. (See Recertification information below).
Is the class offered in Spanish?
No. Chadwell University does not currently have a bilingual instructor. Our classes are taught exclusively in English. However, testing materials are available in Spanish for students who feel they would do better that way. If you are registered for a CPO class and would like a handbook and exam materials in Spanish, please email learn@chadwellsupply.com at least a week before your class.
What is needed to pass and when will I know?
You must score 75% on the exam to pass. Your test will be graded by the instructor on site and you will receive a certificate of completion indicating your score. If your score is 75% or greater, keep this temporary certification until your official documentation is received by mail.
What if I pass?
You will receive your official certification from NSPF by mail in approximately 4-8 weeks. If you do not receive this documentation, please email service@NSPF.org. The CPO Certification is valid for five years from the test date.
What if I do not pass?
You have 90 days after taking the original exam to complete the retake exam. Email learn@chadwellsupply.com to discuss options for retesting. Please note, retesting is limited by the instructor’s availability and we cannot guarantee that retesting will be possible within the required 90 days through Chadwell University. If retesting can be arranged through Chadwell University, a retest fee must be paid in advance.
Do I need to take the class to renew an expired license?
If your current license has not expired by the class/exam date, you are only required to come to the second day of our two-day CPO class. Before registering, please email a copy of your current license to learn@chadwellsupply.com. While not required, you are encouraged to attend both days at the exam-only on-day price.
If your original CPO license has expired (or will be expired before our next exam session in your area), you will need to attend both days of the class. For more information, please visit the PHTA website.
EPA608 Certification
Section 608 of the US Federal Clean Air Act requires all persons who work with regulated refrigerants to be certified. Chadwell University is certified through the ESCO Institute to offer the required training and administer the closed book exam.
Do I need to study before the class?
Preparation prior to the EPA608 class and exam is strongly encouraged. At registration, you will receive study materials and access to online practice tests to help you prepare.
Study materials will be emailed to the address(es) provided at registration from learn@chadwellsupply.com.
If you have registered for a review and exam session through Chadwell University and have not received study materials, please email your name(s), session date, and location to learn@chadwellsupply.com.
What is needed for the class?
Please bring a photo ID, pencil, and calculator to the test. A smartphone’s calculator cannot be used.
Is the class offered in Spanish?
Chadwell University has some bilingual instructors but, unless the class is specifically noted to be in Spanish, the material is presented in English. If requested in advance, testing materials can be made available in Spanish for students who feel they would do better that way. If you are registered for an upcoming class and would like a handbook and exam materials in Spanish, please email learn@chadwellsupply.com as soon as possible.
Many students who request materials in Spanish decide, once they see the Spanish version of the handbook with extensive technical information, to instead use the English materials. At registration, you will have access to prep materials in both Spanish and English. It is recommended that you download and review both if you are unsure which version of the class materials and exam would be best.
What is needed to pass and when will I know?
There are four sections to the exam. Candidates must pass the Core section of the exam before receiving any type of certification. The four types are:
Type I – Required for servicing small appliances. Must pass the Core and Type I sections of the exam.
Type II – Required for servicing or disposing of high-pressure appliances and HVAC systems. Must pass the Core and Type II sections of the exam.
Type III – Required for servicing or disposing of low-pressure appliances. Must pass the Core and Type III sections of the exam.
Universal Certification – Must pass all four sections of the exam.
Tests are sent by mail to ESCO to be scored. A passing score on this exam is 70%. Results are available online at escotinst.com in 2-3 weeks and will be received by mail 3-6 weeks after the exam. EPA Certifications do not expire.
What if I do not pass?
Retesting through Chadwell University is limited by the availability of an instructor or test proctor. Email learn@chadwellsupply.com to discuss options for retesting. If retesting is arranged through Chadwell University, a fee of $79 must be paid in advance.
Can I take the EPA608 Exam without taking the Chadwell University class?
Yes! There is a more extensive self-study program: Item #107047 (English) and Item #107051 (Spanish) can be ordered from Chadwell Supply.
The EPA608 exam must be administered by a registered test proctor. Speak with your local Chadwell Supply Associate about local testing availability prior to ordering the full self-study guide.
Is there an online version of the EPA608 exam?
The full EPA608 exam may be taken online but not without a registered proctor present.
There is no unproctored online exam that will earn the certification necessary to service HVAC equipment or to purchase refrigerant.
